According to data compiled by GfK Asia Marketing Services, monochrome handsets have a 48% share in class A cities while colour phones have grown to reach 52%. However, all-India share of monochrome handsets is estimated to be much higher than 48% because consumers in B, C and D class towns largely use these mobiles.
The top four slots were retained by Nokia handsets. All the four are priced in the range of Rs 2600 to Rs 3260. These were followed by Motorola models, priced at Rs 2,010 and Rs 2,040 respectively. Chinese firm Ningbo Bird, which entered India recently, has sold 1,470 units of its monochrome phone, priced at Rs 1395, making it the tenth most favourite model in the segment.
Launched in June, the Made-in-India Spice S500 features among the top 10 monochrome models list.
He said the S500 had been customised for Indian needs, like a black keypad for dirt protection and a louder ring tone volume to ensure that the user does not miss a call in a noisy environment. At Rs 2,400, the dual-band Spice GSM mobile has sold over 3,500 units by November
