DoT places security hurdle for 3G

In a move that is likely to further delay the introduction of 3G services in India, the Department of Telecom has directed all operators to start the services only after monitoring arrangements are tested and approved by security agencies.
The launch of 3G services has been delayed for over an year as the government is yet to free the requisite frequencies from the defence forces.
The move comes as the Ministry of Home Affairs had raised apprehensions regarding the monitoring facilities that were currently in place for all types of value added services, including 3G, the DoT said.
“All the service providers are directed to start 3G services only after making satisfactory monitoring arrangements and testing of such arrangements by authorised security agencies,
